Trains & Trolleys

Train Station 1.jpg (31050 bytes)The train station in Amherstburg was opened in 1896.  Prior to this time the station was at Gordon just north of the town.   The Michigan Central Railroad (M.C.R.R.) provided twoice daily service to Windsor connecting through Essex until 1923.  The station was abandoned in 1969 with freight service ending in the early 1970s. 

Today the station building contains the Gibson Gallery and has been restored by the Fort Malden Guild of Arts and Crafts.

 

Sandwich, Windsor and Amherstburg, S.W. & A. interurban street cars began running in 1903.  The transported passengers and farm produce to and from Windsor.  In 1925 there were trolleys leaving Amherstburg every hour.  The trip to Windsor cost 15 cents and took just over an hour. Trolley 1.jpg (51737 bytes) Trolley 2.jpg (59210 bytes) Trolley 3.jpg (105502 bytes)
